Morph it. Shape it. Mutate it. Blend four waveforms on an XY pad, shape them with a vocal resonator, and mutate them into new sounds. OriGen8 runs in any DAW that hosts VST3 instruments on Windows or Linux; a Mac version is not available yet.

About OriGen8

The morph pad

OriGen8 is a free polyphonic synthesizer that builds its sound from four waveforms (sine, saw, pulse and triangle) placed in the four corners of a square pad. Drag the dot and the sound blends smoothly between them, from pure and round to bright and buzzy. Every note can wander across that pad on its own, driven by an envelope, an LFO, the arpeggiator or how hard you play.

The blended sound then passes through a resonator with three tuned peaks, which gives it a vocal, “talking” quality. A wavefolder adds harmonics and grit, and a brightness control tilts the whole tone darker or lighter. The result ranges from soft evolving pads to sharp plucks, moving basses and rhythmic arpeggios.

Mutate, on the Perform tab

What sets OriGen8 apart is Mutate. One click nudges dozens of settings at once to create a new variation of the current sound. Every result is kept in a short history, so you can step back, compare with the previous version and lock the parts you want to keep. It is a quick way to find sounds you would not have dialled in by hand.

OriGen8 is aimed at producers and sound designers who like hands-on, moving sounds, and at anyone curious to explore a synthesizer without reading a manual first.

Features

Sound engine

  • Morph pad: blend four waveforms (sine, saw, pulse, triangle) by dragging a dot across an XY pad
  • Snap modes for the pad: move freely, or snap to the four corners or a grid
  • Live display: see where every playing note sits on the pad as it moves
  • 16-voice polyphony, with a mono mode for basses and leads

Tone shaping

  • Resonator with three tuned peaks for a vocal, formant-like character, with four response modes (Low, Band, High, Peak)
  • Resonator key tracking: the peaks can follow the notes you play
  • Wavefolder with drive for extra harmonics, from warm to aggressive
  • Brightness control to tilt the overall tone darker or brighter
  • Amplitude envelope (attack, decay, sustain, release)

Movement and modulation

  • Morph envelope: every note travels across the pad as it starts
  • Morph LFO with five motion shapes (circle, figure 8, horizontal, vertical, random walk), free or synced to the song tempo
  • Key and velocity control over the morph position
  • Drift: subtle, analogue-style variation in pitch, phase, morph position and waveform colour
  • Modulation matrix with 6 routes, connecting sources (velocity, key, envelope, arpeggiator, random, LFO, 4 macros) to destinations (morph, pitch, volume, resonator, brightness, fold, pan)
  • 4 macro knobs to control several settings at once while performing

Arpeggiator

  • Six patterns: Up, Down, Up-Down, Converge, Diverge, Random
  • Synced to the song tempo (1/4 to 1/32, including triplets) or free-running
  • Range of 1 to 4 octaves and adjustable note length
  • Arp-to-morph: each arpeggio step can move the sound across the pad in a repeating pattern

Voices and stereo

  • Unison of up to 8 oscillators per note, with detune and stereo spread
  • Stereo width per note: left and right can sit at slightly different points on the pad
  • Per-note panning, overall stereo width (0–200%) and a Mono Bass option that keeps the low end centred
  • Glide (portamento) by time or by speed, with a legato option

Mutate: sound discovery

  • One click creates a new variation of the current sound by nudging many settings at once
  • Range control from Subtle to Wild
  • Eight “genes” (Morph, Resonator, Tone, Envelope, Unison, Drift, Mod, Matrix) that can each be locked to keep that part of the sound
  • Lineage: the last 8 generations are kept, so you can jump back to any earlier one
  • Hold Compare to hear the previous version for a quick A/B
  • Change bars show at a glance which settings a mutation moved, and how far

Interface and workflow

  • One-window design with tabbed panels; no manual needed to get started
  • Every control can be automated from your DAW
  • Sounds are saved with your project and in your DAW's preset system
